Tanner De Witt further Grows Commercial and Regulatory Practice with Appointment of Consultant Munenori Kaku
Tanner De Witt confirms the appointment of senior commercial and regulatory lawyer Munenori (Muny) Kaku as a Consultant with the firm’s Corporate and Commercial practice. The appointment was effective Monday 20 September 2021.
Muny, a native Japanese speaker, is fluent in English and has more than ten years’ legal experience. He is dual qualified in Hong Kong and New York and has a focus on general corporate and securities regulation. Muny routinely advises clients on commercial transactional matters and regulatory and compliance. He has represented clients in various matters including cross border share purchase transactions and bankruptcy proceedings.
Prior to joining Tanner De Witt, Muny worked at SMBC Nikko Securities, Nomura and Credit Agricole, serving as Head of Legal and Company Secretary in his most recent role in Hong Kong. Prior to working in Hong Kong, Muny was an associate lawyer at Ohashi & Horn LLP, a boutique law firm in New York City.
Muny has a LLB and LLM in Japanese law from leading Japanese university Keio University and a JD/LLM from Washington University in St Louis, USA. Muny’s appointment to the firm strengthens Tanner De Witt’s multicultural capability. His native Japanese language skills coupled with his appreciation and understanding of Japanese business culture positions him well in the Asian legal market.
Tim Drew, Partner and Head of the Corporate and Commercial practice, said:
“Muny’s arrival at the firm marks another milestone in Tanner De Witt’s diverse client offering, in particular the setting up of a Japan desk to better assist Japanese clients with their business needs in Hong Kong. In addition to Muny’s business acumen, his commercial and regulatory experience, particularly from an in-house perspective, will add further strength and depth to our service capabilities.”
Muny remarks: “I am delighted to join Tanner De Witt. As a former Head of Legal at a large Japanese securities company, there is considerable compatibility between TDW’s commercial and regulatory practice and my experience. I am grateful for the opportunity to join TDW, one of the largest independent law firms in Hong Kong.”
